Are Adult Children Covered by Parents’ Insurance for Rehab?

Health insurance plans, including those offered by parents, can help adults cover the cost of drug and alcohol rehab services. Verifying your health insurance coverage for rehab and understanding out-of-pocket costs is essential if you are seeking treatment.

Parental Rehab Coverage Before Age 26

If you are under the age of 26 and are on a parent’s health insurance plan, your health insurance provider should cover the cost of addiction treatment. Finding a treatment center that takes your specific health insurance plan is often the key to making sure that drug and alcohol rehab costs are covered.

Parental Rehab Coverage After Age 26

Almost always, coverage through a parent’s health insurance plan will end when you turn 26. However, your loss of coverage at age 26 creates a special enrollment period. This means that you or your child can get a new health insurance plan outside of the general open enrollment period.

There are exceptions to this rule. Some states will allow dependents to stay on their parents’ insurance policy after the age of 26 under specific circumstances.

Financial Assistance for Addiction Treatment

What if you are no longer on your parents’ health insurance plan? You have options. Here are some ways to get help covering substance use treatment.

Finding a New Health Insurance Plan

Most young adults will want to get a new health insurance provider upon turning 26.

  • Marketplace Plans: The first option is to enroll in a Marketplace Plan through gov (or your state’s marketplace website). When completing the application, you’ll answer questions that will help you learn about your options.
  • Student Healthcare: If you are a student, your college will likely have a student healthcare plan available.
  • Employer-Based Coverage: If you are employed and your job offers health benefits, you may qualify for enrollment in health insurance through your employer. Talk with your employer to learn more about your eligibility.

There are also ways to get in-person help applying for healthcare coverage. For example, you can Find Local Help via Healthcare.gov.

Scholarships, Grants, and Payment Plans

There are circumstances where people will need help paying for drug and alcohol rehab. This may be due to a lack of insurance coverage. It could also be that you are not able to cover out-of-pocket costs left over after your insurance pays for a portion of your services.

Often, treatment centers can help you access resources like scholarships, grants, and payment plans. Please ask our team for assistance if you need it.

Treatment Options and Insurance Coverage for Adult Children

Purpose Healing Center is proud to serve our community. All of our programs are covered by the majority of popular health insurance plans.

Drug and Alcohol Detox

Most people begin their recovery journey with medical detox. When you are physically dependent on a substance and stop using it, you are at risk of withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms range in severity and may require medical treatment.

Our drug and alcohol detox programs in Arizona will help you get through the acute withdrawal stage. Staff are present to monitor vitals, administer meditation, and provide support 24/7. However, detox does not address the underlying causes of substance abuse.

If needed, you can expect to stay in medical detox for about 3-10 days. This stay will be covered by insurance. Then, you can start therapy in an inpatient or outpatient treatment environment.

Inpatient Rehab for Substance Use

Inpatient rehab for substance abuse involves living on-site at a treatment center. Purpose Healing Center provides comfortable bedrooms, TVs, a swimming pool, communal spaces, and other amenities to make your stay an enjoyable one.

During the day, inpatient rehab clients follow an intensive therapy schedule. This will include groups, individual therapy sessions, and, if possible, family therapy sessions, alongside other activities.

An insurance company will generally cover a 30-day to 60-day inpatient drug rehab stay. Before you leave, we’ll help you make an aftercare plan. Usually, this will involve ongoing substance use treatment in the form of outpatient care.

Outpatient Rehab for Substance Use

We offer various outpatient treatment options for those healing from drug and alcohol abuse. Mainly, these include our:

  • Partial hospitalization program (PHP). The most intensive form of outpatient care, our PHP meets daily throughout the week. Sessions take up a significant portion of the day, leaving room for other activities (e.g., work or school).
  • Intensive outpatient program (IOP). Our IOP is the next step down from PHP. Clients participating in substance use treatment at this care level will have the time needed to balance responsibilities like work with addiction therapy.

In many cases, people enter outpatient treatment after finishing inpatient rehab. However, some people participate in outpatient rehab as an alternative to inpatient care. During the intake process, Purpose Healing Center can help you decide on the right treatment trajectory for you.

Many clients stay in outpatient drug rehab programs for weeks to months. Regardless, these programs are covered by insurance.

Dual-Diagnosis Treatment

Purpose Healing Center provides dual-diagnosis treatment covered by insurance. Available in both our inpatient and outpatient rehab programs, dual-diagnosis treatment addresses addiction and co-occurring conditions (e.g., anxiety or depression) simultaneously.

Dual-diagnosis treatment is strongly recommended for people with co-occurring disorders. This approach promotes positive outcomes, such as better psychiatric functioning and an improved quality of life.

Mental Health and Trauma Treatment

In addition to addiction and dual-diagnosis treatment, we provide standalone mental health care services in Arizona. These programs offer specialized care for mental health concerns such as mood disorders, trauma, and anxiety disorders.

Similar to substance use treatment, mental health treatment programs are covered by insurance.

Up To 100% of Rehab Costs Covered By Insurance

It’s important that you are able to focus on your recovery, not treatment costs. If you’re not sure how to pay for treatment or do not know if your insurance provider will help you pay for drug rehab, our team will assist you.

Whether you want to get help for yourself or someone else in your life, please call our admissions line. All calls to our team are 100% cost and commitment-free.

FAQs: “Are Adult Children Covered by Parents’ Insurance for Rehab?”

Can I cover my adult child on my health insurance?

It depends. If your healthcare plan covers dependents, your health insurance company should allow you to cover your adult child until they are 26. Generally, this includes young adults who are married or in school.

Will my parents know if I go to therapy on their insurance?

Yes and no. If you are covered by your parents’ health insurance plan, they may receive bills, which can reveal some information. For example, the patient name (your name), where you go to therapy, and the diagnosis the insurance company is billing for. However, what you discuss in therapy sessions will be kept private.

What happens if a parent goes to rehab?

When a parent goes to rehab, their children may stay with another parent, family member, or other trusted adults. Depending on the treatment center, family members (including children) are often able to visit. Kids may even participate in family therapy sessions. Once a parent returns, custody arrangements determine whether the child will live with them.

Will I lose custody if I go to rehab?

Parents can lose custody of their kids when substance abuse impacts their ability to care for a child. Attending substance use treatment can help you show legal professionals that you are taking initiative, which can, ultimately, positively affect child custody.

Will my health insurance cover rehab?

Yes. Under the Affordable Care Act, substance use disorder treatment is an essential health care benefit. Usually, this means that addiction treatment is covered. The type of health insurance plan you have may determine what percentage of your services are paid for and what your total out-of-pocket expenses are.

Can I be under my parents’ health insurance if I don’t live with them?

Yes. Your home address should not affect your health insurance coverage. This means that, even if you move away for college or live on your own, you should be able to keep your parents’ health insurance coverage until your 26th birthday.

What is the oldest age to be on parents’ health insurance?

Usually, the oldest age to be on your parents’ health insurance is 26. In some states, however, dependents in certain situations (e.g., unmarried persons who are in school full-time and have no children) might be able to stay on their parents’ health insurance policy for longer.

What is a preexisting condition in health care?

A preexisting condition can refer to any health problem that a person has prior to the start date of their new health insurance plan. This includes both physical and mental health conditions.
