The Mental Health Connection to Drug Addiction
Mental health, behavioral health, and substance abuse (whether drug or alcohol addiction) often overlap. Addiction issues are complex – you can’t heal until you understand and address the underlying causes.
That’s where the professional help from our treatment programs can help. When you arrive, you will meet with an intake professional, who will ask you some questions about your relationship with drugs and alcohol. This brief mental health assessment program gives the treatment team a snapshot of any current or past mental health issues or trauma.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment for Healing Mental Health Disorders and Drug Abuse
The term co-occurring disorders (more commonly known as a dual diagnosis) refers to a secondary diagnosis in addition to substance use. Having a second mental illness is common.
For instance, someone may have bipolar disorder, self-medicating with illicit drugs to stabilize their moods. Effective mental and behavioral health treatment programs know that managing these is essential to maintain long-term recovery.
Brinley: A Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment Success Story
A family member had pleaded with Brinley for years to seek treatment for their mental health conditions and alcohol abuse. They had even tried outpatient services once, but it did not last. After the outpatient treatment center didn’t work out, Brinley felt like a total failure. Brinley started cutting; it made them feel more in control. After a while, the self-harm no longer satisfied Brinley; they escalated to using street drugs, combining them with the alcohol they abused.
After a nearly lethal overdose, a kind emergency department social worker explained how drug rehab without caring for mental health concerns was often ineffective. Brinley learned that the reason they didn’t recover was the failure of the past outpatient treatment, not theirs.
Brinley came to Purpose Healing Center for a residential treatment program. There, they discovered that a lifetime of bullying had caused post-traumatic stress disorder. Brinley had psychotherapy to understand their alcohol and drug addiction. They also worked with a behavioral health treatment specialist to learn better ways to cope with bullies. Today, Brinley is enjoying the best mental health of their entire life…and remains substance-free.

Why Seek Substance Abuse Treatment Outside of Tucson, AZ?
Here’s what past clients have explained about choosing Purpose Healing Center over a Tucson facility:
- Addiction Treatment Centers in Tucson May Have Less Availability: While it’s the second-largest city in Arizona, some people find fewer recovery centers in Tucson, AZ, which means delays in receiving drug and alcohol rehab. In these cases, concerned family members often make first contact with Purpose Healing Center.
- Tucson Treatment Centers May Have Fewer Specialized Treatment Programs: Some chose our treatment program because they needed a recovery center that could provide a full continuum of care. The patchwork approach less intensive programs might offer is short-lived and leads to additional harm.
- We’re Not That Far: Many from Tucson came to Purpose Healing Center because we are an inpatient holistic health center. However, the drive from northern Tucson is near enough for those needing the best outpatient treatment. The drive through the picturesque mountains and Sonoran desert provided time for them to reflect on their new skills.
Treatment Options to End Substance Use (Alcohol or Other Drugs)

Here are some options you’ll find at Purpose Healing Center, a premier residential treatment center:
Medical Detox: The First Step to Freeing Yourself from Substance Abuse
When you arrive at Purpose Healing Center, you will quickly meet with an intake specialist (as mentioned earlier). Then, you will take the first major step to sobriety: medical detox.
Under the care of a highly skilled team, you will be made as comfortable and safe as possible during detoxification. If you have severe withdrawal symptoms, we prescribe drugs to ease them.
Therapy Plays a Key Role in Success at the Treatment Center
Our clients receive psychotherapy to resolve the internal conflicts that set up prime conditions for substance abuse. This happens in individual counseling and often includes group therapy. These treatment sessions address the causes of addiction and your relationship with drugs and alcohol. When you understand the underlying harm to your mental health, you gain insight into how you can heal.
Most clients also receive behavioral health treatment, learning how to replace more harmful coping methods (like using substances) with non-harmful new habits (like medication).
Medication Management Assists Recovery
Some addictions scramble the messaging between the brain and the body. Medication management replaces the harmful chemical with a long-acting, less addictive prescription as the brain and body heal.
What are the Levels of Care Offered at Purpose Healing Center?

We do not have a one-size-fits-all approach to care but offer a full range of options:
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Intensive outpatient programs offer at least nine hours a week of structured therapies to someone struggling with addiction and mental health concerns. This outpatient program allows clients to receive treatment while attending work or school.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
This outpatient program is more structured than the IOP. Clients receive intensive treatment and go home each night. It also gives the client more time to work with our team, as they come to the treatment program five days a week, six hours daily.
Inpatient Treatment (Residential Program)
Our residential program provides 24-hour daily care for those with the greatest needs. Clients in the inpatient program center have a supportive, structured environment. It’s our most intensive care.
