What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

Officially, PTSD is a psychiatric condition affecting people who have undergone situations causing intense feelings of fear, terror, or stress. It is classified as a trauma- and stressor-related disorder according to the DSM-5 (the industry-standard Diagnostic and Statistical Manual used by behavioral health professionals).

Essentially, individuals with PTSD experience long-lasting symptoms associated with a traumatizing event. This ranges from nightmares, flashbacks, panic attacks, and emotional outbursts to feeling detached or numb, having trouble remembering the event, or having problems enjoying life. This can begin developing immediately after the event or can start months down the road.

When PTSD is severe, it makes it harder to hold down a job and maintain housing. Individuals with PTSD may also struggle with relationships. Fortunately, by seeking help at a trauma treatment center like Purpose Healing, you can overcome past trauma and take back control of your life.

What Traumatic Event Can Cause PTSD?

There is no specific guideline for how traumatic an event needs to be for it to have a lasting impact. Any of the following events, among others, have the potential to cause trauma if they cause enough fear, panic, terror, or stress:

  • Medical trauma
  • Incarceration (and particularly solitary confinement)
  • Childhood physical, mental, emotional, or sexual abuse
  • Prolonged domestic violence
  • Severe car accident
  • Natural disaster
  • Miscarriage or death of someone you’re close to
  • Physical or sexual assault
  • Combat and war
  • Torture or kidnapping
  • Serious accidents

It is normal to experience some troubles for months after a traumatic event. When problems persist for 3-6 months or longer, however, it may be time to consider a PTSD treatment program. An estimated 6.8% of Americans experience this mental health disorder following trauma in their lives and some never seek treatment.

The Typical Symptoms of PTSD and How They Often Affect Life

Not everyone experiences PTSD in the same way. While individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder experience several symptoms on this list, they rarely experience all of them.

The most common symptoms of trauma and PTSD include:

  • Problems with thinking and concentration
  • Memory issues
  • Hypervigilance or constantly feeling on alert
  • Obsessive-compulsive tendencies
  • Anxiety
  • Panic episodes
  • Paranoia or psychosis
  • Agitation or anger issues
  • Emotional outbursts
  • Feelings of emotional numbness or detachment
  • Eating disorders
  • Using drugs or alcohol to self-medicate
  • Nightmares or flashbacks of the event
  • Difficulty remembering the event
  • Avoiding places or situations that remind you of the event
  • Crying spells or depression
  • Suicidal thoughts or attempts
  • Feeling hopeless about the future
  • Mood swings
  • Difficulty sleeping

Challenges like these make it harder to keep a job, have healthy relationships, and enjoy activities you once did. By reaching out to our staff at Purpose, you can take the first big step toward a better life.

PTSD vs Complex Trauma or CPTSD

Those of us who experience traumatic events during childhood and adulthood (rather than just as a mature adult) have the potential to develop complex post-traumatic stress disorder or CPTSD. While the term is not officially recognized, yet, by the DSM-V, it is gaining widespread use and recognition.

Complex trauma and PTSD share many symptoms. However, individuals with complex PTSD also struggle with symptoms like:

  • Difficulty managing emotions
  • Experiencing outbursts of anger, episodes of extreme sadness, suicidal ideations, or other intense emotions
  • Intrusive thoughts
  • Increased risk of self-harm
  • Relationship problems and difficulty forming lasting relationships
  • Severe negative emotions including feelings of shame or guilt
  • Negative self-image and problems with self-esteem and self-worth
  • Feeling detached from the world around you

While anyone who also has suffered trauma in childhood can experience signs of complex PTSD after a traumatic event, it is most common in individuals who experience prolonged trauma. It is common in adult survivors of childhood physical and sexual abuse, domestic violence, kidnapping or torture, prolonged bullying, slavery, or genocide.

How is PTSD Treated?

Individualized Treatment Plan

Trauma treatment begins with an intake appointment where you’ll work with an expert to discuss your needs. The intake process can be emotional. You may be asked to discuss the traumatic events leading to your decision to seek treatment. Other questions might include medical and mental health history, any substance abuse issues, whether there is family support, and how trauma is affecting your life.

At Purpose, we craft individualized treatment plans to address trauma and co-occurring disorders to give clients the best shot at long-term recovery. We use a combination of recreational activities, individual and group therapy, nutritional services, and medication to treat issues like eating disorders, anxiety, depression, insomnia, psychosis, or substance use disorders. Family therapy may also be recommended in some cases.

Purpose Offers Evidence-Based Trauma Treatment at Every Level of Care

Whether you choose residential or outpatient trauma programs at our treatment center, we strive to provide a safe, welcoming environment where clients can start to heal. Several therapies are used during the treatment process with the hopes of helping patients overcome trauma and related triggers and learn resilience.

Our treatment center also makes it easy to access help for any underlying disorder caused by the trauma. Patients getting support at our treatment center return home and have better employment outlooks, fulfilling relationships, more happiness, and a generally improved quality of life.

Should I Attend an Outpatient Program or Residential Treatment for PTSD?

In cases where clients have outbursts of anger or psychosis, severe panic attacks, or are at risk of suicidal attempts or self-harm, rehab at an inpatient treatment center may be the best course of action. During residential treatment, a combination of medication, therapies, and recreational activities are used in a healing, supportive environment.

Residential trauma treatment may last a few weeks up to three months. The length of treatment is going to depend on the person. Your individual needs and how residential trauma recovery is progressing may change how long you need to stay at a treatment center. Additionally, the therapies used during treatment may vary based on the type of trauma, underlying issues, and needed support.

How Long Does Trauma Therapy Take?

Trauma therapy is something that varies for each person. While some therapies take just a few months, others last a year or longer. However, except in severe cases of PTSD, many clients complete outpatient programs. This makes it easier to commit to a treatment program and manage PTSD symptoms without disrupting day-to-day responsibilities too much.

For those who choose residential treatment, there are 30-, 60-, and 90-day programs. The length of the stay will depend on the severity of an individual’s trauma, how effective therapy seems to be, and when they are ready to leave the treatment center. The number of days that your insurance provider will cover may also affect the length of your stay.

Ongoing Support: Purpose is With You Every Step of the Way

Clients leaving residential treatment often follow up with an intensive outpatient program or partial hospitalization program. Intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs last several hours a day, with those hours being spread out across the week. We offer flexible hours that make it easy for individuals in recovery to get support while still going to work, sleeping at home, and taking care of other responsibilities.

Individuals with insomnia, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues that linger after PTSD treatment may also work with a psychiatrist for additional support. Furthermore, individual and group therapy may be used to help clients communicate their experiences and learn skills for overcoming trauma in a supportive environment.

Therapies Commonly Used to Treat Trauma

Cognitive behavioral therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy challenges individuals with trauma to question unhelpful or harmful thoughts surrounding trauma. Because trauma is so unique to the person who experienced it, cognitive behavioral therapy is most often used in an individual therapy setting.

For example, someone experiencing feelings of guilt or shame might be asked to explore why they feel that way and then work to challenge those thoughts when they pop into their head. This might benefit someone who survived a natural disaster or other trauma with family members who did not make it.

Other types of therapy offered at our PTSD treatment centers include experiential therapy, prolonged exposure therapy, somatic therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and art therapy. Each has its benefits and sometimes, several types of therapy are used as part of the PTSD treatment process. For example, art therapy somatic therapy explores the mind-body connection while art therapy is great for personal expression.

Narrative exposure therapy is another new but effective PTSD treatment where a person works with a therapist to give their traumatic experience meaning. By doing this, a person can learn to control the narrative and how they allow that narrative to shape their thoughts and feelings.

Some clients prefer a holistic approach to trauma treatment. While not all of these therapies are offered at our trauma treatment center, some alternative treatments used for PTSD and trauma include Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage therapy, and Reiki. Clients will have the opportunity to learn about holistic, meditation, deep breathing, mindfulness, and yoga.

Mental Health and Trauma Recovery

While post-traumatic stress disorder is a condition on its own, untreated trauma can lead to separate mental health or substance use disorders. Understanding the link between unresolved trauma and mental illness is one way that our trauma treatment center is different than our competitors.

At Purpose, we believe that you cannot focus on recovery without addressing both the root causes of trauma and the co-occurring or dually diagnosed disorders that clients may be dealing with. Having the right support for mental health is critical following trauma and you will find that at our treatment center.

Choosing the Best Trauma Treatment Center

Yoga Therapy

You won’t find the same standard of care at every trauma treatment center. In addition to our accreditation and the evidence-based therapies we use to treat trauma, we work hard to make the recovery process easier every step of the way.

As an inpatient client at Purpose Healing Center, you can focus on healing. Inpatient clients also have access to a swimming pool, basketball court, gym, and other amenities to promote physical activity and improve mental health. We also offer meditation, mindfulness, yoga, art therapy, music therapy, and other activities that benefit treatment.

Considering Dual Diagnosis Treatment

It’s not uncommon for people with untreated trauma to also struggle with substance abuse. Many forms of substance abuse exist and it is easy to turn to drugs and alcohol to make yourself numb or less aware of your traumatic experience.

For individuals who struggle with substance abuse and PTSD, Purpose is a dual-diagnosis trauma treatment center. By focusing on untreated trauma while learning coping skills to overcome addiction, you can solve two problems at once and give yourself the best chance at lasting recovery.
