When you aren’t in individual therapies or group therapy, you might wonder what you can do with all of your free time. In the past, you might have turned to substances in your downtime. Now, you need to find new ways to occupy yourself. Take advantage of some of these sober living activities.

1) West Valley Arts Council

Soak up all of the culture and beautiful art that comes out of this wonderful city. Local artists can put their galleries on display at the West Valley Arts Council. Make the most of an air-conditioned museum on a hot Arizona summer day or spend an evening at one of their fun events.

You can even do a little shopping here from time to time with pop-up shops. It can be a visual reminder of your time at Purpose Healing Center.

2) Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium, and Safari Park

Just a short drive away, you can visit the Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium, and Safari Park. This is the ideal way to engage with your kids after going through substance abuse treatment. You will make memories that will last a lifetime now that you can be fully present for them without substances.

From white tigers to kangaroos to stingrays, there is something here for everyone. Even better, they are open every day of the year so that you always have something to do if you have a break from your group therapy options.

3) Hiking Trails

Walking has been proven to have a positive effect on your mental health. Even if you have a serious mental illness, walking and enjoying the best that nature has to offer can be a great distraction from a drug or alcohol addiction. Make sure to grab your walking stick and some comfortable shoes before you set out!

Fortunately, Glendale is home to some incredible trails where you can focus on nature and ignore the calls of drug and alcohol use.

You can visit any of these parks to work up a sweat outside of our facility:

  • Lake Pleasant Regional Park
  • Sahuaro Ranch
  • Thunderbird Conservation Park and Paseo Park
  • White Tank Mountain Regional Park

4) Westgate Entertainment District

Westgate Entertainment District

Maybe shopping is calling your name now that drug or alcohol abuse is a thing of the past. One of the best places to visit outside of our alcohol addiction treatment program is the Westgate Entertainment District. It’s home to shopping, restaurants, hotels, and even some big-ticket events.

As part of the entertainment district, Westgate is also home to Desert Diamond Arena where you can catch a local concert. You can also visit State Farm Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals. Both of these are great activities to immerse yourself in the best Glendale has to offer outside of our alcohol and drug rehab facility.

5) Xeriscape Botanical Garden

Do you want to see the best that Glendale, AZ has to offer when it comes to flora? Xeriscape Botanical Garden is a great place to visit if you want a crash course in native flowers, bushes, trees, and cacti. It is home to more than 1,000 species and covers an impressive number of acres.

Walk around the city’s demonstration garden to see succulents, a cactus garden, and more. It is also close to the Historic Sahuaro Ranch Park and the local library where you can learn more about these plants native to the desert.

6) Mattel Adventure Park

The Mattel Adventure Park will be opening in 2024, right in the heart of Glendale at the VAI Resort. It will be a 9-acre theme park that will feature both indoor and outdoor elements with the Mattel brands you know and love. Once it opens, you will find fun theme park rides, interactive experiences, and even theatrical events.

This is a great destination for kids. It’s not as big as Disney World where you could get lost for days, but it’s still fun for the whole family. Plan to spend an entire afternoon at the park to see all that there is to see. You’ll get plenty of walking in and some fun adrenalin-pumping rides that will help you forget about alcohol or drug addiction for an afternoon.
