Looking at Common Myths Surrounding Urine Drug Testing
Worried you’re going to test positive on an upcoming drug test? You might have heard of lots of home remedies you can try to clear THC metabolites from your blood for urine tests, some of which sound unlikely. Pickle juice and drug tests are well-known options, but they may not work the way you hope.
Pickle juice can dilute the urine sample more than it should, especially if you’re drinking lots before your test. It could result in a second follow-up test. However, drinking lots of pickle juice leading up to a drug test can, in some cases, flush it out of your system faster (its vinegar content may help).
Let’s be clear though, it is not a reliable or 100% effective way of passing a drug test. The only way of being certain you will pass a test is to stop using substances for a significant enough time prior to testing.
Purpose Healing Center can help if you struggle with substance use and need to consistently pass a drug test. We offer medical detox and residential treatment to give you around-the-clock access to care so that you can focus on sober living.
Here is what you should know about pickle juice and drug tests before you decide to try synthetic urine and the more drastic ways of attempting to get past urine testing.
Does Pickle Juice Work for Urine Tests?

Maybe you’re facing an unexpected drug test for work or probation, but you know that you’ve recently used substances. There are lots of myths out there surrounding what you can do to get a clean urine sample naturally–without waiting for the drug to clear your system.
Some people may recommend a remedy like cranberry juice, but what about pickle juice?
The truth is that this trick may not work as well as you hope it will to pass an official drug test (or even a panel drug test). Here is what you need to know about the home remedy of drinking vinegar and pickle juice to avoid a positive test result when it matters the most.
Diluting Human Urine and a Failed Test
If you do decide to take a chance on drinking pickle juice to clear marijuana metabolites out of your body, then you need to consider the timing. Guzzling a jar of fresh pickle juice will lead to diluted urine, which poses a problem for testing facilities.
Typically, they have a set creatinine level that they look for in samples, as diluted urine from detox drinks and other methods is fairly common.
When you drink too much directly before a test, the creatinine levels are too low for facilities to get an accurate reading. They may request that you redo the urine tests on a different day or take a different type of test (like a blood test).
The possible good news is that this might buy you an extra day or two before giving a second sample. It might mean the difference between a positive result and a negative one.
It’s also important to note that pickle juice can result in high blood pressure due to the sodium content. Studies have shown that eating too many pickles results in higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure. If you already have issues with your blood pressure, this is one home remedy you may not want to try. To stay hydrated and keep things flowing, opt for water or cranberry juice instead.
Don’t Add Pickle Juice to a Urine Sample
It’s also important to note that you don’t want to get rid of THC in your urine sample simply by adding a splash of vinegar or pickle juice to the sample. This isn’t going to help you pass a drug test and impacts the specific gravity, a telltale sign of a falsified test.
The testing facility will know and drug use will come to light, sooner rather than later.
Flushing THC Metabolites From Your System

There is nothing particularly magical about pickle juice or cranberry juice when it comes to testing for the presence of THC metabolites (or other drug metabolites such as cocaine metabolites for that matter). One of the arguments about drinking pickle juice over some of the other detox products on the market is that it flushes your system quickly.
If you’re constantly drinking lots of anything, you’re naturally going to be urinating more frequently. This increased fluid intake can help.
Every time you go to the bathroom, you’re flushing out some more of the toxins in your body that could make the difference. Just make sure that you space it out before the test to keep from diluting the urine. You may also want to continue to drink electrolytes like Gatorade to keep you from a system imbalance.
Vinegar Content and the Drug Test
Of course, there is a benefit to drinking pickle juice over just flushing your system with plain water. The primary ingredients in pickle juice are simply vinegar and salt. It’s the vinegar, in particular, that gives this ingredient its edge. Vinegar contains acetic acid which can neutralize the THC metabolites in a urine sample.
You may not want to rely on this method as a failsafe if there are serious consequences for a positive drug test.
However, you might have success with it if you are on the line between a positive test and it being clear of your system. It’s a better option than trying to pass a panel drug test with fake urine and could result in false negatives.
Do You Need Pickle Juice for Second-Hand Marijuana Smoke?
The good news is that secondhand marijuana smoke and passive exposure are unlikely to result in a positive test for a given test subject. You can drink pickle juice if you want to be on the safe side and try to flush your system in a healthy way, but it’s practically impossible for urine testing facilities to know that you have been near someone who engages in drug use.
Don’t overdo it and dilute your urine sample which could damage your overall health and result in your retest. An appropriate amount would be approximately one gallon of pickle juice plus some water to keep you hydrated from the vinegar and salt.
Stick with Other Natural Methods for Detoxing Your Body

Don’t forget, you might be able to get your body clean for a urine test simply by natural means. For example, you might be able to drink more water rather than trying to race to the bottom of the pickle jar. It’s a lot more pleasant and might yield the same results if you have a day or two to flush out your system.
The exact amount to drink is a bit tricky, but staying hydrated is important. Drink steadily throughout the day rather than guzzling in large quantities.
Another common method is to burn fat cells. That’s right: exercise might be the ticket to get your blood moving and help you to sweat out the drugs. THC attaches to your fat cells, so the more you burn those cells, the more likely you are to get false negatives.
Just remember to consume fluids and stay hydrated while you work out, which really gives you the best of both worlds. However, be aware that it may not always work, and that abstinence for sustained period prior to testing is the single best approach.
