Medical Detox and Mental Health Treatment at Purpose Healing

Purpose Healing Center is an accredited substance abuse and mental health treatment center in Arizona. With a team of experienced medical and mental health professionals, we provide medical detox and mental health support for people struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders.

In many instances, detox will be your recommended starting level of care. While it’s short-lived, we know that it can be daunting.

Our article will discuss what you should know about detox and mental health as a dual-diagnosis client and how Purpose Healing Center can help.

Understanding Co-Occurring Disorders

If you have a substance use disorder, it’s very possible that you have one or more additional mental health concerns. People with mental health conditions such as the following are at a notably higher risk of drug and alcohol abuse.

  • Depression.
  • Bipolar disorder.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • Personality disorders.
  • Anxiety disorders.
  • Eating disorders.
  • Schizophrenia.

There are several reasons for this. First, mental illness and substance abuse share many of the same risk factors, like trauma. Additionally, many people use alcohol and other drugs to cope with (self-medicate) symptoms of mental disorders.

The Importance of Integrated Treatment

When addiction and mental health conditions go together, dual-diagnosis treatment is important. Also called integrated treatment, dual-diagnosis treatment is a kind of addiction treatment that addresses addiction and mental health disorders simultaneously.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), integrated treatment for addiction and co-occurring mental health issues is linked to various positive outcomes. For example:

  • A greater chance of successful recovery from (or treatment of) both disorders.
  • Improved psychiatric symptoms and functioning.
  • Reduced or discontinued drug and alcohol use.
  • A lower likelihood of medication interactions.
  • Fewer hospitalizations.
  • Better quality of life.

Our highly experienced and trained staff members use the most evidence-based treatment methods for mental health and addiction recovery. Complementary and holistic treatments are also available.

Drug Withdrawals and Mental Health

Drug Withdrawals and Mental Health

For people with (or even without) co-occurring mental health conditions, detox can be a sensitive time. When you go through the drug and alcohol withdrawal process, you might experience emotional and psychological symptoms with the physical symptoms you may think of when you picture substance withdrawal.

Possible mental health-related drug withdrawal symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • Trouble concentrating or focusing.
  • Feeling less interested in hobbies or social activities.
  • Drug and alcohol cravings.
  • Feelings of depression.
  • Lack of motivation.
  • Increased anxiety.
  • Irritability.
  • Fatigue.

Some also experience mood swings, sleep difficulties, and other symptoms. While these often occur during the acute withdrawal stage, some can persist for longer.

Prolonged Withdrawal Symptoms

If you have mood-related symptoms persisting from months to years after acute withdrawal, you likely have what’s called post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS). While PAWs can increase your risk of relapse, it will end, and you will get through it.

Detox as a First Step in Addiction and Dual-Diagnosis Treatment

In detox at Purpose Healing Center, our team will take care of you during the acute withdrawal process. Detoxification, or detox, is essential for many persons in recovery for several reasons. These include but aren’t limited to:

  • Safety and structure. Some are at risk of severe withdrawal symptoms during the acute withdrawal stage. For example, delirium tremens, which can be fatal if left untreated, occurs in a percentage of persons going through alcohol withdrawal. Detox is necessary if you’re at risk of life-threatening or potentially serious symptoms.
  • Relapse prevention. Going through the detox process on your own can be tough. You or your loved one going through drug cravings during withdrawal may benefit from detox in part to avoid relapse during this vulnerable stage.
  • Emotional support. We provide emotional support during the detox process, which can be imperative not just for preventing relapse but for those going through mental health symptoms (whether new or intensified).

Most clients complete detox at our facility within about a week. After that, ongoing psychiatric care is crucial so that clients can grow and build the comprehensive set of recovery skills they need.

After Detox: What Comes Next?

Support and Ongoing Care After Detox

Ideally, intensive therapy should be the next step after detox. You can seek help for addiction and co-occurring disorders on an inpatient or outpatient basis. In addition to our medical detox program, Purpose Healing Center offers a range of programs. These include our:

  • Residential inpatient treatment program. Inpatient treatment programs involve living on-site at a treatment center. In inpatient rehab at Purpose, you’ll receive immersive treatment for addiction and mental health. You can leave at any time, but most clients stay for about 1-3 months.
  • Partial hospitalization program (PHP). Also called day treatment programs, PHPs usually meet Monday through Friday for most of the day. PHP can be an alternative to or a step down from inpatient treatment programs.
  • Intensive outpatient program (IOP). Intensive outpatient treatment is a step down from PHP but above traditional outpatient therapy in intensity. IOP usually involves getting therapy three days per week. This is ideal for clients who need to balance treatment with work or school.
  • Outpatient program (OP). Standard outpatient treatment is a step down from IOP and typically involves about 1-2 days of therapy per week.

All clients at Purpose Healing Center get custom treatment plans. We will also help you make a discharge or aftercare plan before you leave. Yours will be unique to you but may involve referrals to local resources like support groups or sober housing. We also have an alumni support program.

What are the symptoms of detoxing?

Symptoms experienced during the detox process can differ from person to person. Common physical symptoms include sweating, shaking, gastrointestinal distress, and body aches or muscle pain. Psychological or emotional symptoms can also occur.
