What is alcohol addiction?

Addiction is a disease the manifests in the brain. A person suffering from addiction engages in risky behaviors despite knowing that these actions bring them harm. Addiction acts like a compulsion in someone with the disease. They know right from wrong, but they are powerless to stop themselves from acting out these behaviors.

Addicts will not stop what they are doing without an intervention. The drug or alcohol that they use brings them intense pleasure. The repeated use of the drug changed the way the brain reacts to pleasurable stimuli. Even with treatment, the person will always crave the substance they used to take.

How do you treat alcohol addiction?

Successful alcohol addiction treatment takes place in conjunction with a treatment facility. You participate in one of the following:

  • An inpatient program (during which you live at the facility)
  • An outpatient program (where you live at home but meet with a clinician for treatment)
  • An intensive outpatient program (where you live at a sober living facility)

There is no right or wrong way to complete addiction treatment. All methods offer a resolution and a chance at sobriety.

For all patients, regardless of treatment style, the first step is an intake interview. During that interview, a trained staff member assesses the incoming patient’s overall health and asks questions that expose the full scope of the addiction. The doctor/therapist needs the whole picture so they can devise an accurate treatment plan for the patient. To appropriately treat addiction, the therapist also needs to see if there are any condition the co-exist alongside the addiction that could be contributing factors.

Once admitted into the facility, before joining the other residents for activities, you undergo a detox.  To detox, a person ceases any alcohol and drugs “cold turkey.” The side effects are unpleasant. A patient can experience anything from nausea and chills to delirium tremors when withdrawing from alcohol. Complications can occur so a doctor must supervise the procedure.
