Drug abuse intervention is a service we offer to patients in Scottsdale. And it’s a critical service because one of the most heartbreaking things that a loved one or friend can experience is losing someone to addiction. It can be very upsetting to see someone you care about change due to the effects of drugs or alcohol, and in some cases, becoming almost unrecognizable compared to their former self.

The following are some very important things to account for if you decide to have an intervention. These can make a challenging situation more manageable:

1: Research & Plan Ahead

More than just confronting an addict, you will need an action plan. Ideally, you will do this with the advice of an expert, such as a social worker, psychologist, or an intervention specialist. In any intervention, it’s important to create a plan of action rather than trying to simply improvise. You should also know ahead of time what you will do if your intervention succeeds. All of this needs to be planned and researched ahead of time, so you will have the answers.

2: Know What You Want To Say & Make Notes Prior

You will want to make specific points and arguments during an intervention, so plan these out in advance. You will need specific examples that you can cite about how this has been affecting your lives, not just general descriptions like, “it has not been good”.

Everyone present at the intervention needs to have a say in the matter, and every person should speak who is at the intervention. Otherwise, they should simply not be there. And the point is to help the addict, and not to be accusatory or angry. Sticking to the facts is also a best practice. Arguments should not be any more emotional than necessary. As examples, addicts will often run into financial problems, miss appointments, and have other practical issues.

3: Build A Team

In much the same way that you can plan for the details of an intervention, the same should apply to the people attending it. Since this isn’t going to be a casual conversation, it needs to be a focused event with the people most invested and also most effective at reaching out to the addict to help to facilitate real change. The team will ideally include a mixture of family and friends, and everyone should agree on a specific time and place.

4: Get Professional Assistance

It’s natural to feel overwhelmed by the seriousness of planning an intervention. It’s also natural to prefer that someone with experience would be there to help guide you through the process. There are counseling and psychological professionals who can serve as interventionists.
